To date, this was probably my worst hike for reasons I have only myself to blame.
Queensland, Australia is full of outdoor activities; this tropical state is the perfect place to start your travels as I mentioned in Go Down Undaa. If you do visit Cairns and the surrounding area, Walshs Pyramid hike is a great way to spend a morning, just make sure you start before the sun gets too hot.
A little info on Walsh’s Pyramid before I talk about the hike: it’s the highest freestanding natural pyramid in the world. You get a good view of the perfect shape when you are driving to it, trying to find the hidden parking lot.
Makes you want to climb it, right? Lots of locals in the area use this hike as their cardio workout. Each year there is the “Great Pyramid Race,” where competitors run to the top of the summit and back, now THAT would be an experience.
The actual hike itself is a great hike, really works the legs and gets your heart rate up! It’s fairly steep and the track itself is still very natural, which I personally love. Rocks, plants and trees are everywhere on this path, so watch your step and follow the markers. If you live in the area, this is the perfect weekend workout! The views of the landscape at the top are worth the walk, even better if you get it on a clear day!
Trail WALSH’S PYRAMID
Time 4 hours
Level of Difficulty Difficult
Location Queensland, Australia
I hiked it during the extremely warm Queensland summer, and started the hike mid-morning when the sun was already too strong. There were no other hikers at this time, surprise surprise. Why did I start so late? Because I had a few too many the night before at a reunion at Gilligan’s with my Canadian girlfriends also living in Australia. Anyone who has been to Gilligans, understands. I didn’t eat beforehand just drank a massive coffee with a side of Advil and decided the hike was happening. To top off the self-made terrible conditions, I forgot water, sunscreen, and a hat. Luckily my boyfriend shared his small bottle of water with me so we could be dehydrated together once it was finished, that’s love. Is my Hiking Essentials post making more sense yet? Let’s just say the hike was a struggle, and getting to the top felt like the biggest accomplishment of my life. Afterwards, I sat in a Gas Station drinking Gatorade and water for about an hour, before heading back to hotel and sleeping for the rest of the beautiful day.
Despite my personal hike, I still recommend Walshs Pyramid. It’s a good hike for exercise and has beautiful views, just be sure to prepare better than I did!
