I am of the mindset that “If we’re going to do something let’s do it 100% right, and to the best of our ability” and my wedding was no exception.
We are used to hearing that “Getting married is every girl’s dream” until you have your wonderful partner proposing to you and then you start to freak out about all the million things a bride must get one and the endless checklists before the big day. I was never the type of girl that knew what my dream wedding would look like until I got engaged so, my freaking out started with choosing a venue.
I don’t consider anywhere as “home.” I think I have a million homes. I have moved 7 times in my life, and have close friends all over the world. Therefore, “James and my big day” would have not been the same without all of these wonderful friends and family. When looking back at that day, what fills my heart the most (aside from the obvious fact of marrying the love of my life) was having all the people that I care about the most in the world sharing this special day with us- I couldn’t believe it – our favourite people making a huge effort to be there for us and our happiness was just out of this world. I am still trying to find another moment that can compare to this one and I tell you -nothing beats that day.
We decided to get married in Cancun, Mexico. I am Mexican and grew up on a tiny little island in the Mexican Caribbean, called Cozumel. James was born in Barbados, another Caribbean island. We love the sea, and as something that we can relate to, Cancun seemed the perfect spot to have our special day and a location that would provide for much fun for all that came from close and far.
So, the city and country were chosen ✔ then it was time to choose the venue. We chose JW Marriott Resort & Spa because if I was going to get married, I wanted it to be spectacular and perfect -and that’s what the team at the hotel accomplished. Every single detail was planned to the last second.
I was living at that time in Mexico City, so everything had to be planned through e-mail, and through my wonderful wedding planners. I cannot recommend them more highly if you are planning to get married in Cancun or the Riviera Maya. I am a perfectionist, and my wedding planners Mariel and Pao from Eventing Planners were BEYOND amazing. I didn’t have to worry about anything that day, except for having waffles and carbs for breakfast, that’s right- I did not care, I had made it to that day after all the effort of exercising and taking extra care of my diet, so if you asked me, my breakfast of champions was well deserved.
My wedding theme was romantic/vintage and FULL of tiny details ALL OVER THE PLACE, from planned menus, to fireworks, to post-meals after the party.

So our wedding day came, and that’s how this day went by! We started with a small Catholic ceremony.
…and continued the celebration with a cocktail party after our civil ceremony where we had fireworks and all kinds of beautiful stuff. The cocktail party was full of details which included an ice cream cart with yummy flavours; Nutella & almond, lemon pie and coconut, and we had a violinist playing modern songs, and bartenders offering different refreshments and drinks to prepare all for the party to follow!
Our guests were taken to the main salon where a seating assignment was waiting for them, with all kinds of champagne cocktails (mojito royal, cosmo royal, cucumber royal, and mango delight). We also gave a women’s kit with all sorts of treats for all my girlfriends. We had a popcorn bar, sweet bar, spicy bar, wedding cake with half mojito, and chocolate flavors and lots of surprises everywhere.
Dinner came along with a super fancy and delicious menu that any foodie would have enjoyed, and entertained by a wonderful saxophonist. After the seated dinner, the dance floor and the vintage lounge opened up, with lots of props, live music, and even a tequila shot cart was involved!
